Rule #1 of a business website

I just got a panicked phone call from a business owner needing help. It seems that she is in a dispute with the company that designed and hosts her website. Now that the one year anniversary has passed, the site builder wants to increase his monthly hosting fees; in fact, he wants to double them!

So she decided to break up with that company and find someone new. That's when - Surprise! - he informed her she can't do that because the domain name is registered to his company and he won't release it to her.

So here's the thing. Before you even agree to have a business website built, either make sure the domain name is registered to someone you trust unconditionally, or make sure the domain name is registered to you.

Website hosts and website designs can be changed. Losing your domain name can be an expensive proposition.
